SAN ANTONIO, TX — April 10, 2025 Saint Mary’s Hall is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved educators and community pillars, Brian Kaestner, who passed away on April 8, 2025. Known to generations of students simply as “Coach Kaestner,” he spent an extraordinary 44 years shaping minds, building character, and leading with a passion that left a lasting impact on thousands.
A revered teacher, coach, mentor, colleague, and the legendary leader of the school’s commencement processional, Coach Kaestner embodied the heart and soul of Saint Mary’s Hall. His presence on campus was constant, his voice steady with encouragement, and his belief in the potential of every student unwavering.
“Coach Kaestner was more than a teacher—he was a force,” said a longtime colleague. “He had a gift for making every student feel seen, heard, and believed in. He wasn’t just preparing them for a test or a game—he was preparing them for life.”
Throughout his decades at the school, Brian taught with clarity and coached with intensity, but always led with kindness. Whether on the field or in the classroom, his high expectations were matched only by his even greater support. Students often speak of the lessons he taught that went far beyond textbooks or scoreboards—lessons about resilience, accountability, empathy, and leadership.
Perhaps nothing captured his deep connection to the school more than his role as leader of the commencement processional—a position of deep symbolic importance at Saint Mary’s Hall. His familiar voice calling graduates forward, his steady steps leading the way—these moments marked a rite of passage for generations, and now, will be treasured as enduring memories.
Coach Kaestner’s legacy is not just in the wins or the curriculum, but in the lives he changed: the young people who found confidence under his guidance, the colleagues who found friendship in his presence, and the countless families who knew their children were in the care of someone who truly cared.

“Coach, we love you,” the school shared in a statement. “We are so grateful for your profound impact on our community. You made Saint Mary’s Hall a better place, and we will carry your spirit forward in all that we do.”
Plans for a celebration of life and remembrance service are underway, with details to be shared by the school in the coming days. In the meantime, Saint Mary’s Hall encourages alumni, friends, and community members to share their memories and tributes, which will be compiled to honor Coach Kaestner’s incredible legacy.
