Fredericksburg, VA – April 8, 2025 — A tragic and chaotic scene unfolded Tuesday afternoon in Fredericksburg as local authorities responded to reports of a mass shooting near Lafayette Boulevard. According to early, unconfirmed reports, a total of seven individuals were shot — five adults and two children — in what is being described as a devastating act of violence. At least three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident reportedly occurred near the Sheetz gas station on Lafayette Boulevard, a heavily trafficked area not far from residential neighborhoods and local businesses. Witnesses say gunfire erupted suddenly, sending bystanders running for cover as the sound of sirens quickly followed.
Emergency medical personnel and law enforcement flooded the area shortly after the initial reports. Fredericksburg Police have since confirmed a “major active investigation,” but have not yet released official victim identities or details surrounding the suspected shooter.
A heavy police presence remains on Olde Greenwich Drive, where law enforcement is believed to be focusing efforts related to a possible active shooter situation. Officers were seen canvassing the area, blocking off intersections, and urging residents to remain indoors while the situation developed.
“We are urging the public to avoid the area as we continue our investigation,” one officer stated to local media. “This is a developing and sensitive situation. Please be patient as we work to gather verified facts.”
No arrests have been confirmed as of Tuesday evening, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Investigators from the Fredericksburg Police Department, Virginia State Police, and other regional agencies are actively working the case.
Local schools in the area, including several elementary and middle schools, were placed on temporary lockdown out of an abundance of caution.
The Fredericksburg City Council has released a brief statement expressing condolences for the victims and pledging full cooperation with law enforcement as the investigation unfolds.
