Harrison City Mourns the Loss of Beloved Restaurateur Janet Whirlow – Longtime owner of Janet’s Restaurant remembered for her culinary passion and community spirit

HARRISON CITY, PA — Janet Eleanor Whirlow, the cherished owner and founder of Janet’s Restaurant in downtown Harrison City, has passed away at the age of 87. A pillar of the local business community and a beloved figure in the town, Whirlow leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, and over five decades of culinary dedication.

Whirlow opened Janet’s Restaurant 51 years ago at the corner of Route 130 and Harrison City-Export Road—an iconic location that quickly became a cornerstone of the town’s dining scene. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and comforting homestyle meals, the restaurant has served generations of residents, travelers, and families over the years.

Though Whirlow was one of the first real estate brokers in the area, her true passion was always in the kitchen. Her love for food and community came together seamlessly at her restaurant, where she could often be found greeting guests, preparing meals, or chatting with regulars over coffee.

Beyond her business success, Janet was a devoted animal lover and quietly generous supporter of local causes. “She reached out to the police department and supported our K-9 program,” Police Chief John Otto recalled. “She didn’t do it for recognition. That’s just the kind of person she was—caring, thoughtful, and always ready to lend a hand.”

Over the years, Janet’s Restaurant became more than a place to eat—it became a gathering spot, a comfort zone, and a symbol of home for many in Harrison City. Patrons remember her not just for the meals she served but for the compassion and community she cultivated.

Plans to honor Whirlow’s memory are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.

South Boston, MA – The Boston Police Department is investigating an apparent suicide that occurred in the South Boston neighborhood on Wednesday, May 29, 2025.

Authorities say that a man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near the intersection of L Street and Summer Street. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin. No further details have been made available at the time of this report.
