I-64 Suicide: 1 Dead After Jumping from Providence Road Overpass in Virginia Beach – Interstate 64 Traffic Severely Impacted During Police Response
Virginia Beach, VA — A tragic incident on Friday afternoon led to major traffic disruptions along Interstate 64 in Virginia Beach after a person died following a jump from the Providence Road overpass.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) confirmed that police activity caused the closure of all westbound lanes near mile marker 286.9, close to the Indian River Road West exit. Eastbound lanes near mile marker 286.2 were also temporarily closed, along with the I-64 express lanes in both directions between I-264 and Battlefield Boulevard.
VDOT first reported the incident shortly after 1 p.m., issuing a traffic alert that a westbound detour had been established at exit 286A (Indian River Road) to redirect drivers.
As emergency crews and investigators responded to the scene, the shutdown led to extensive delays, with traffic backing up for nearly three miles, according to live traffic camera footage.
Throughout the afternoon, lanes gradually reopened:
- 2:30 p.m.—One lane westbound reopened
- 3:30 p.m.—Two general-purpose lanes westbound and the eastbound express lanes reopened
- Shortly before 4 p.m., all westbound general-purpose lanes and express lanes were fully reopened
VDOT and local authorities advised drivers to remain patient and check for ongoing updates through official channels as the situation unfolded.
No further details about the individual or the circumstances leading to the fatal incident have been released at this time. Authorities are continuing to investigate.
